I remember the first time I listened to Led Zeppelin. it didn't take long until I realized that they were really something special. I thought about what it must have been like to see them live. I did the reasonable thing, and found some people that had seen them live, sometime before I was born. the people I asked told me the experience of the live show was amazing, but shared a little detail I had not taken into account. They were using "drugs" in particular psychedelics. Little did I know that Led Zeppelin "live" goes best with LSD or "Magic Mushrooms". The tradition of mixing drugs and music certainly did not miss my generation. The drug of choice may be different with Ketamine, and MDMA certainly having their day as the trendy choice to enhance your latest festival experience. People like using psychedelics because they enhance peoples experience, through changing the way your brain works. Who would have known that this information would potentially be the biggest break through in mental health treatment of the last 30 years.
The use of psychedelic's in therapy leverages a property of these class of medications called "Nuero Plasticity" this means they make it easier for your to discontinue unhelpful thought processes in favor of new thoughts and behaviors. If you remember getting a a "Etch a sketch" for Christmas as a kid you had to shake to start a new drawing, these shake your brain, but in a good way. allowing your brain to create a better "portrait" of you. The changes to treatment over the next few years could be nothing short of profound. As these treatments develop as consumers I feel we need to be open to many new options for treatment for mental health as the landscape of typical treatment changes.
